Brett’s World of Warcraft-inspired backpiece.
Brett is a really talented tattooer working in Geelong. He got in touch last year about getting his back done, which is always exciting when it’s another tattooer asking you.
And his idea was pretty hard to say no to. A blood mage inspired by World of Warcraft, holding a staff, magic shooting out, and riding a tiger. I thought that was just the coolest concept.
I drew something up, he loved it, and we got started.

This is a massive piece, so it’s taken a while to get to where we are now. We’ve been working on it pretty regularly, and Brett sits really well, which definitely helps when you’re taking on something this size.
There’s something really nice about working with another tattooer who understands the process. We’ve taken our time with this one, getting into the little details and spending the extra time refining things along the way.

Looking back through these photos is pretty cool. You’ve got the stencil covering his whole back, the early lines, then the background starting to go in. And finally, all that colour building up in the mage and the tiger. A lot of sessions between those photos!

I’m really happy with how it’s coming together. It’s been such a fun idea to work on, and we haven’t exactly stopped at his back either.

We extended down onto the back of his left thigh with an orc version of a severed-head design, taking the idea from Japanese namakubi tattoos and keeping it in the World of Warcraft theme. That part is finished now, although I’ll have to share a proper photo of it another time.
And now we’ve started his right leg. A massive dragon, with both of his dachshunds worked into the design. One as a little warrior and the other as Kannon. That’s going to be super fun to show you once it’s finished.
So there’s plenty more to come with Brett. Thanks again for trusting me with such a big project. Hope you enjoy seeing how it’s been coming together!
